Look on the engine block for a serial number (above the flywheel on top right hand corner) and casting numbers on the heads, intake manifold. With this information I can look up what motor you have or go to any Chevy dealership with this info and they can tell you what year and motor it is. Remember though that some parts need to be marine parts only: something that doesn't cause external sparks or your boat can explode.

Most internal marine engine parts are not interchangable with auto parts. Marine engines, while using blocks and cranks from auto manufacturers, build the engines with a marine enviorment in mind, using different cams, gaskets, intakes, etc. Go to sierra marine for a good line of internal engine parts for your motor.

No cars!
This 181ci, 3 liter,140hp engine is developed as an industrial engine, they build these engines in cars to get some more torque but no factory car has been build with this 181 ci 3 liter motor.
The smaller GM 153 ci 2.5 liter version has been used in GM production cars, also known as the iron duke (Pontiac)
The components are not interchangable.

Your best bet is to go to a Merc dealer or Merc service shop and have them look up the engine's Merc serial number info. They can provide you with more specific information on finding parts for it if you are for example trying to replace a head gasket or change the piston rings.

However, if this is mainly just for parts such as distributor, starter, water pump, or exhaust manifold, then you will need to purchase the correct "marine" parts for replacing these.

I wouldn't try to look for interchangable parts from other means, go only for what is made for your Mercrusier's engine model and year.

They didnt use the 140 in any cars. They used a smaller 2.5 liter. The parts are not interchangeable.
